Lot Essay

The gilt-bronze figures are possibly designed by Max Blondat, and certainly influenced by his work in sculpture. The present doors are identical to the model exhibited in Ruhlmann's Htel d'un Collectionneur at the entrance to the Grand Salon at the Exposition Internationale des Art Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925.
Joan Kahr, Edgar Brandt, Master of Art Deco Ironwork, 1999, p. 126 illustrates the "Musiciens et Danseurs" door at the 1925 exposition. This doorway is also illustrated in La Ferronnerie Moderne, premiere serie, plate 2.
