PSALTER, in Ge'ez, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
Ethiopia, late 19th century
220 x 157mm. 128 leaves: 14, 2-910, 10-138, 1410, 23 lines written in black ink in a neat traditional hand, the Psalms in one column justified to the left, between 2 scored verticals and 23 scored horizontals, the remaining texts written in 2 justified columns between 4 scored verticals and 23 scored horizontals, prickings visible, rubrics and titles in red, justification: 150 x 120mm, ONE ELABORATE HARG painted in green, yellow and red, and one in red and black ink, 16 additional modern hargs; blind-stamped leather on wooden boards, with cotton panels inset into inside cover (spine split at lower joint with slight losses to leather at head and foot, extremities rubbed, a few gatherings partially detached)

The liturgy and hymns are later additions in a different hand. The addition of the Liturgy to the Virgin Mary to this Psalter reflects the rise of the cult of the Virgin which took place in Christian Ethiopia, particularly during the mid-15th century.
