Collation: a-l8 (Gaza, grammar); a8 b10 (Gaza, on the Attic calendar); AA-LL8 MM4 (Apollonius, pseudo-Herodian). 197 leaves (of 198, title in facsimile), numerous leaves misbound. 31 lines. Type: 1:146Gk (text), incidental other types (title, preface, colophon). Woodcut headpieces and initials from two sets, strapwork and foliate (as in Grenville copy, IB. 24400). (Washed, wormholes in first 3 quires, blank section of a2 cut away and replaced, e2 stained with resultant weaknesses repaired with slight loss, final fore-edges/lower margin repaired.) Modern calf, blindstamped arabesque lozenge on sides. Provenance: annotations in at least 2 hands in Greek.
EDITIO PRINCEPS of all texts and one of the earliest books printed by Aldus Manutius, printed in the year that the press was founded. Gaza was a professor of Greek at Ferrara before being summoned to Rome by Pope Nicholas V to translate Greek works into Latin. His grammar formed one of the cornerstones of the Aldine publication programme by providing a basis for knowledge of the Greek language. It is printed with Aldus's first type, used also to print his edition of the works of Aristotle.
