ASHENDENE PRESS -- Miguel de CERVANTES SAAVEDRA (1547-1616). The History of the Valorous and Wittie Knight-Errant Don Quixote of the Mancha. Translated out of the Spanish by Thomas Shelton. Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1927-1928.
2 (432 x 310mm). Headings and shoulder notes printed in red, large wood-engraved foliated initials and borders by W. M. Quick and George H. Ford after Louise Powell. Original patterned boards backed in Holland cloth, paper spine labels, uncut (labels a little rubbed).
LIMITED TO 225 COPIES on Batchelor handmade paper. There were an additional 25 copies on vellum. The Ashendene Press had been founded by St. John Hornby in 1894, the name being taken from his own home Ashendene in Hertfordshire. In 1899, the press was moved to Shelley House, Chelsea. After 1902, books were printed in Subiaco type cut by E. P. Prince -- modelled on the type used at Subiaco about 1465 by Sweynheym and Pannartz. (2)
