Collation: a-h i-z A-M8 N4 (a1 title, a2r text, N4r colophon, N4v blank). 281 leaves (of 284, a1, r8 and N4 in facsimile), 3 leaves (m1, r6, t6) supplied from a shorter, uncoloured copy. 43 lines. (First quire repaired and strengthened, numerous repaired tears occasionally with slight loss, some marginal sections replaced.) Modern vellum, two fore-edge clasps. Provenance: annotations in a late 16th-century German hand, principally on 5 leaves, providing additions to events concerning Hildesheim, Braunschweig and Rostock.
FIRST EDITION of the 'last great work of Mainz book illustration' (Fuchs, Mainzer Frhdrucke mit Buchholzschnitten). The fine woodcuts are the work of the Master WB and his shop, here with the numerous coats-of-arms coloured by a contemporary artist. They depict fanciful town views, stylised and actual bust portraits and historical scenes. Little is known of the author, but he appears to have been a goldsmith of Wernigerode. HC *4990; BMC I, 37 (IB.259); GW 4963; BSB B-765; Borchling & Clausen 197; Schreiber 3531; Goff C-488.
