NELSON, Horatio, Admiral (1758-1805). Document signed 'Nelson & Bronte' with autograph correction of three words, HMS Victory off Cadiz, 10 October 1805, to 'The Respective Captains', later endorsement in ink on verso, one page, 120 x 200mm (original trimmed and laid down on album leaf, some staining).
Clarifying an order: 'When the signal to wear is made in the Night, it is expected by the time the Third in Command shall have repeated the Signal that the Sternmost and Leewardmost Ships are before the Wind'.
This order was issued by Lord Nelson during the planning of the action which resulted in the defeat of the combined French-Spanish fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805. At the time Nelson gave the order the British fleet was lying off Cadiz out of sight of land and awaiting the emergence from the port of the enemy fleet under the command of Villeneuve.
