SCOTT, Sir Walter (1771-1832). Autograph letter signed to Sir James Stewart, Bt, of Allanbank, Edinburgh, 7 July [1824], 3 pages, 4to, integral address leaf (trace of guards, folds and margins with minor holes and tears).

Scott regrets that he could not send Sir James a copy of the work Memorials of the Haliburtons which he published in 1820 as he has no copy available, and wishes to produce a second edition adding information which has recently come to light; he describes the addition he has made to Abbotsford ('my romance of a manor house') which consists of an entrance hall with oak panelling from the old kirk at Dunfermline, stained glass and a roof adorned with coats of arms of border families ('it does not look in the least garish but on the contrary has a very solemn tone'); he pays tribute to Stewart's own artistic gifts, particularly his etchings ('Poor Byron that wonderfully gifted creature has died without seeing them'), and describes his existence in Edinburgh and Abbotsford as 'a pendulum vibrating from one point to another but never extended or diverging in its oscillation' and ends by urging Stewart to visit him at 'Conundrum Castle'.

Scott's Memorials of the Haliburtons was published in an edition of 30 copies in 1820 with a second edition appearing in 1824.
