The professional Egyptian dancers of the Ghawazi nomads were one of Fabbi's favorite subjects. Known as the almeh they were public entertainers who improvised songs and poems, and they performed in cafs and at private feasts in Cairo. In 1834, an edict issued by the Viceroy Mohammed Ali banished them to Keneh, Esan and Aswan.
