HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN (1805-1875)
One-page autograph sentiment, signed and dated, Rome, 28 April 1846, 232 x 302mm., a quatrain from 'Fifty Short Poems' ('With a bouquet of violets'), in Danish, annotated with a German translation in another hand, in brown ink on wove paper (a leaf from an album amicorum).

Lot Essay

A romantic verse: 'A violet dreamt in the night that it stood at the gates of Eden, lifted up to the beloved's breast, the dream became reality'. The first line differs from the version published in 1847.
Andersen spent much of the spring of 1846 in Rome, after a triumphant progress south through Germany. This leaf may perhaps originate from the album of the 'Glcksborg' family, to whom his diary records a visit on 28 April.
