Lot Essay

Churchill's visit to Bridgetown was part of a tour of the West Indies he undertook in March-April 1960, staying on Onassis's yacht Christina. His host in Barbados was the Governor-General Sir John Stow who recalled how solicitous Onassis was towards Churchill throughout his visit, and described how Churchill, wearing his "Trinity yachting cap at a jaunty angle, received a tumultuous welcome from the people". He also remembers how, at the end of a busy day, "Although he returned to Bridgetown late in the evening, he insisted on signing the visitor's book at Government House". (Martin Gilbert, Winston S. Churchill, Volume III, London, 1988, pp 1308-1311.)
