Florence Glover was the personal maid of Clementine Churchill for at least four years, from April 1951 at Hyde Park Gate and afterwards at 10 Downing Street. She accompanied Lady Churchill on her travels and was responsible for the meticulous care of her extensive wardrobe, as well as being on call throughout the night. Miss Glover remembered Sir Winston as a most charming and courteous man, even when reaching high office. She was later to work at Kensington Palace for the Earl and Countess of Athlone. The letter from Clementine Churchill probably refers to Winston Churchill's acceptance of the Order of the Garter at the end of April 1953. He had previously refused the honour when offered it by King George VI and, according to Churchill's Principal Private Secretary, Jock Colville, now felt this had been rather discourteous and was keen to take the honour as long as he was able to keep his name. Colville noted that, however, 'Mrs Churchill disliked the idea very much because she didn't want to give up being Mrs Churchill'. (Martin Gilbert, Winston S. Churchill, Volume III, London, 1988, pp 822-823.)
