Written from Merton Place, the home bought for her by Nelson and which she inherited, this letter illustrates the financial difficulties in which Emma Hamilton found herself after Nelson's death. She writes to William Haslewood, Nelson's solicitor, as an executor of his will. A codicil to the will bound the executors to pay all Emma's expenses at Merton for a period of six months after his death. This ran out in April 1806 and by July she had given up her other house in Clarges Street and moved entirely to Merton. Despite being amply provided for by both her late husband and Lord Nelson, her generosity and extravagance drove her into debt and she was forced to sell the house in 1808.
