[MILITARY JOURNAL] In two folio volumes, belonging to CAPTAIN THOMAS DE HAVILLAND of Guernsey, of the 33rd Foot, written 1800-1820 (browning and some staining to margins), one volume bound in vellum (stained and worn at edges), the other in red calf (scuffed and worn with losses to spine).
A detailed account of his travels with Colonel Wellesley's regiment in India and through Egypt in the form of journal entries and copies of correspondence and receipts. He notes the daily progress of the expedition describing military instructions and notes on the territories passed through, his concern about supplies and disease and his work as an engineer, also mentioning the campaign against Tippoo Sahib at Mysore. One volume is largely concerned with 'A Statement of the circumstances in which Captain de Havilland of the Madras Engineers was involved in the year 1809-1810', being the subject of a Court Martial at Seringapatan. Also included is a map of the Southern coast of Crete, and account of the route of the Indian army from Alexandria to Suez in July 1802 and 'Historical notes on the Island of Guernsey'.
