DA VINCI, Leonardo. Recueil de testes de caractere & de charges, [Paris]: J. Mariette, 1730. 4, engraved title with light brown shading printed from a woodblock by ?Lodovico Cigoli after A. Carache, 59 engraved plates on 31 leaves by Caylus after Leonardo da Vinci, one engraved plate with two-colour brown shading printed from two woodblocks by Lodovico Cigoli (small part of margin of A1 torn away, B3 with short marginal tear), contemporary half sheep (worn). Provenance: Granville of Calwich Abbey, Staffordshire, bookplate.
A good copy internally. There is some confusion over what constitutes a complete copy of this work: Brunet V, 1258 and Cohen-de-Ricci 212 call for 40 plates, while Cohen-de-Ricci 623 calls for 36. This is particularly curious in the light of the catalogue of Leonardo designs which accompanies this work as leaf C4, which states that there are 59 images, as here. The British Library copy also agrees with the present copy, having 59 etchings on 31 leaves, plus a final plate by Cigoli.
