The Far East: A Monthly Journal, Illustrated with Photographs, [Shanghai: for the Proprietor, at the 'Far East']: July 1876 - December 1877. 2 volumes, 4, 116 mounted albumen prints, some 2 to a page (occasional light soiling, some leaves creased), contemporary cloth, spines titled 'The Far West' [sic] in gilt. With a duplicate volume. Sold as a periodical, not subject to return.

The subjects of the albumen prints are principally in the environs of Shanghai, but also include views in or about Tokyo, Nagasaki, Kumamoto and Yu-Yan. Other subjects include 'Japanese Geishas', 'Anglo-Chinese Contingent - Artillery', 'Canton Junks', 'Coolies Waiting for Employment', 'The Punishment by the Cangue, Hongkew Police Station' and 'A Perambulatory Restaurant'. According to the title page of one volume the periodical was 'Published Simultaneously in Tokio, Japan; Shanghai, China; and in Hong Kong.' (3)
