Lot Essay

This south-east view of Westminster Abbey depicts to the right the tower of St. Margaret's Westminster, the roof of Westminster Hall, and the turrets of St. Stephen's Chapel which until the fire of 1834 accommodated the House of Commons. Hugh Phillips in The Thames about 1750, 1951, identifies the buildings at the water's edge at this date as Mr Scott's Brewhouse, Barnard's Yard, the house of the architect, Batty Langley, the wood wharves of Charles Dixon, and the stone wharf of Andrew Jelf who was the masonry contrator for Westminster Bridge. To the right can be seen the Westminster end of Westminster Bridge, and beyond it the Banqueting House.
