Denmark Hall, an upmarket entertainment hall apparently named after a visit by Prince George of Denmark in 1768, is depicted in the centre foreground. The building was later to be converted into private residences. The London townscape in the background extends from St. John the Evangelist Smith Square on the left to Southwark Cathedral and the Tower of London on the right. In the distance are the Northern Heights crowned by Hampstead and Highgate.
Robertson and Lerpinire engraved a companion oval view of London and Westminster seen from Hampstead Heath near the Spaniards tavern, which was published by John Boydell in 1780. Robertson had studied at Shipley's Academy and in Rome before accompanying William Beckford of Somerley Hall, Suffolk, to Jamaica in 1774. He painted a number of topographical views, many of which were engraved, and exhibited mainly at The Society of Artists.
