Billingsgate Market was long famed for fish and bad language. It was considered the main wharf for the mooring of fishing vessels and the landing of their cargoes. In 1850 the market's ramshackle accumulation of sheds and boots were replaced. In the distance is Old London Bridge and the buildings depicted on the south side of the river are St. Olave, Tooley Street, the Tooley Street Shot Tower, which was burnt down in 1843, and St. Saviour's Church, now Southwark Cathedral.
