Lot Essay

During the 18th century, Putney Heath was notorious for duels, and to a lesser extent, highwaymen. During the Victorian period Putney saw a ten-fold increase in its population. In the 1820s a few modest suburban villas and artisan cottages were built and in 1836 the parish church was rebuilt to the designs of Edward Lapidge. In 1846 the railway from Waterloo to Richmond, passed through Putney and made it much more accessible. After 1860 there was extensive new development which continued until the First World War.
