Lot Essay

The Thames near Greenwich shows a view in Greenwich Reach looking up river from East Greenwich. The in-coming tide brings shipping to London. The vessels include sailing barges to the left, a steam tug pulling four coal barges upstream in the centre, and a two-funnelled paddle steamer in the distance. In the background can be seen the Royal Naval College and the spire of St Paul's Deptford.

The Tower of London from London Bridge shows a scene on the ebb tide. The vessels include a 'stackie' on the left, a steam tug pulling barges upstream and two steam colliers moored alongside a pier equipped with a steam crane.

Charles John de Lacy studied at Lambeth and South Kensington. He lived in London and Cheam and often painted views on the Thames and scenes of the docks.
