Admiralty Arch was built in 1910 to the design of Sir Aston Webb as part of the Queen Victoria memorial scheme. It is the terminal point of the Mall and leads into Trafalgar Square. The wrought iron gate in the central arch is opened only on ceremonial occasions.
Mary Georgina Barton was born in Dundalk, Ireland. In 1895 she set up house in London and studied at Westminster School of Art. In 1898, she studied in Rome where she also gave art classes. In 1909 she was appointed an associate of the Society of Women Artists and two years later became a full member. Although she lived for a considerable time in London in Carlisle Place, SW1, she travelled extensively and exhibited abroad at the Paris Salon, as well as in Venice, Vienna and Durban.
