Lot Essay

A painter of interiors and flower still-lifes, Herbert Davis Richter practiced furniture design and architecture before studying at the London School of Art under Sir Frank Brangwyn, R.A. (1867-1956). He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

The present work is a preliminary study for a decoration for the Cunard White Star's second Mauretania. Furnished with decorations by some of the best known artists and designers of the period, this luxurious liner was launched in 1939 and finally dismantled in 1965.
