Thomas Cantrell Dugdale studied at Manchester School of Art, the Royal College of Art and in Paris at the Acdemies Julian and Colarossi. He exhibited widely and was elected a Royal Academician in 1943. Best known as a portraitist, he also painted many views of London streets.
The church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields on Trafalgar Square was rebuilt by the architect James Gibbs between 1722 and 1726. Among those buried here are the artists Nicholas Hilliard, 1619; William Hogarth, 1762; Sir Joshua Reynolds, 1762; the sculptor, Louis-Francois Roubiliac, 1762; the architect, James 'Athenian' Stuart, 1788; and the cabinet maker, Thomas Chippendale, 1779.
