Charles Ginner studied in Paris at the Acadmie Vitti and the cole des Beaux-Arts. He moved to London in 1910 and became a key member of the Fitzroy Street Group in that year, the Camden Town Group in 1911 and the Cumberland Market Group in 1914. In 1914 he held a joint 'Neo-Realist' exhibition with Harold Gilman (1876-1919), advocating a return to nature in painting and the use of solid pigment. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1942.
The present work was painted while the artist was living at 66 Claverton Street in Pimlico and looks in the direction of the Thames. Some of the cranes on the far side of the river are just visible beyond the rooftops together with one of the chimneys of Battersea Power Station on the left.
