Lot Essay

Cyril Arthur Farey was the most successful perspectivist of the early twentieth century. Myerscough-Walker wrote in 1958, 'No architect could draw as well as this perspectivist and I doubt whether his equal will be seen again in this country' (see G. Stamp, The Great Perspectivists, London, 1982, p. 131).

Constructed in 1929-31, the elevations for the Derry and Toms' Building, were designed by Bernard George. The building combined American store planning with the Beaux-Arts manner of elevational design and as such brought to the High Street an architectural sophistication and scale previously absent. Farey's perspective is thought to be for George's design and the building is still standing today.
