St. James's Park is the oldest of London's royal parks. Originally a marshy field, it was annexed and drained when Henry VIII rebuilt the nearby leper hospital as St. James's Palace. The park was developed through the centuries and the present form of the lake dates from 1855.
The view across the lake to the spires, pinnacles and domes of Whitehall has been described as 'the most astonishing and romantic roofscape in London' (see. B. Weinreb and C. Hibbert, The London Encyclopaedia, London, 1983, pp. 716-718).
