Lot Essay

The cartography of Canada on this unusual miniature globe implies a date of manufacture some time after MacKenzie's extensive exploration of the area completed in 1789 . However, the rest of the cartography is consistent with a late eighteenth-centrury publication date. Very little appears to be known about the maker EKEMM, suggesting he was not very prolific. This example of his work, however, is a fine late eighteenth-century pocket globe the gores of which, apart from the numerous small areas of varnish loss, are in remarkably good condition.
