A fine French orrery, in the style of Charles Dien, the 1.3/8-inch (3.5cm.) diameter gilt brass atop a central brass column, with wooden earth ball and two-sided card discs with engraved representations of Mercury, Venus and the moon attached via a simple train gear mechanism with handle, also attached to the central column six brass spindles with similar planet discs to represent Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune, with their names, one other disc unidentifiable, one further disc inscribed 35[?] Plantes tlscopiques dures moyenne des revolutions 4 ans [...] with a further inscription on the reverse (illegible; all the cardboard components water-damaged), with a brass meridian circle set at an angle of 17, inscribed EQUINOXES, and another set at 0 inscribed SOLSTICES, raised on a baluster brass and ebonised fruitwood tapering column and circular plinth base -- 18.7/8in. (48cm.) high
