Lot Essay
Included with this Lot are parts of the set of gores that originally covered this globe, together with photographs of the process of their removal. The gores were a darker version of this globe from the Klinger Kunsthandlung, from a slightly later date, differing mainly in the fact that the text is in Dutch. The trade label reads DE AARDE volgens nieuwste ontdekkingen Uitgave van C. Abel-Klinger te NUREMBERG. Presumably as Carl Abel, upon taking up control of the Klinger business in 1852, found the resources to have more up-to-date gores engraved, he would cover his old stock with the new gores. To make matters more interesting, it would appear that the polar calottes on the globe as it now stands come from yet a third globe, differing slightly as they do in colouring and cartography from the rest of the gores.
