Large-format photogravure on vellum from 291, double issue numbers 7-8, deluxe edition. 1915-16. Signed, titled and dated in pencil in the margin; signed, titled and dated in pencil on a label affixed to a later overmat. 13 x 10 3/8in. Framed. Together with Camera Work, Number 47, July, 1914 (the What is '291'? issue), including a handwritten note from Stieglitz, dated April 26, 1945; the trimmed front of a mailing envelope in Stieglitz's hand in ink bearing the return address of An American Place (509 Madison Ave.). The items in this lot were acquired directly from Stieglitz late in his life, in 1945, by Mahlon Naill, an actor. The handwritten note which accompanies the What is '291' issue reads: For Mahlon Naill - May you discover in these pages who Hodge Kirnon is. - And much more perhaps. Alfred Stieglitz, An American Place, April 26 -45. Hodge Kirnon was the elevator attendant at '291'.
