Lot Essay

A single owner set, one of the duplicate copies of the 'What is '291'? issue (Number 47, 1914) is inscribed, To Gaismann - Who is of the Spirit - 291 - April 2, 1917 by Stieglitz in pencil on the front free endpaper.
This set has survived remarkably well with all covers, spines and bindings intact. Only Number 5 has its cover partly detached. All issues are complete as published except for Number 8, the Frederick Evans, issue which lacks the plate "In Sure and Certain Hope". Nearly all pages are crisp and clean with only occassional soiling, no foxing or water damage and all plates in excellent condition. A superb example in nearly mint condition with the spines barely broken.
