Lot Essay

Cf. Christie's London, 10 November, 1981, lot 142, for a very similar figure collected by a colonial administrator in the upper Benue area between 1922 and 1926. William Fagg wrote of that figure: "Typically for old Tiv work, this figure is carved in an exceptionally hard wood (at least as hard as 'African ebony'), so that it is remarkably well preserved in spite of being almost certainly of nineteenth century origin. Its bold sculptural forms make it an outstanding work among the rare Tiv figures."
