The original Admiral Teggethoff commanded the Austrian squadron which broke the Danish naval blockade of the Elbe and Weser rivers during the Prusso-Danish war over Schleswig-Holstein in 1864. In 1866, his squadron of seven ironclads engaged an Italian force of ten ironclads supported by twenty-two wooden vessels, closing to point-blank range before opening fire and inflicting heavy casualties. The battleship which bore his name was constructed in Trieste between 1910 and 1913, and served in World War I. It was eventually surrendered to Italy as part of the war-reparations.
