A Victorian Officer's Sword of the West York Militia
A sword of 1796 Light Cavalry pattern, with 31in. blade copiously etched for most of its length with foliate decoration, Trophies of Arms, Britannia, VR cypher, a Crest (probably that of The Duke of Wellington) and a Rose within a circle inscribed WEST YORK MILITIA, brass (originally gilt) stirrup hilt, with engraved decoration on langets, wire-bound wooden grip and backpiece terminating in Eagle's head pommel, in a massive black leather scabbard, with brass mounts, the chape extended to incorporate the middle-band.
