Able Seaman James Hentson, an Isle of Wight man, entered the Indian Navy in July 1856, aged 28 years. Initially posted as an Able Seaman to the Zenobia, he served in the Carpenter's Crew of No. 4 Indian Naval Brigade during the Mutiny. Discharged in September 1859 from H.M. Pendant Vessel Calcutta, it is probable he died shortly afterwards, the Medal Roll noting his award was 'Received for Administrator of J. Hentson by C.D. Campbell, Indian Navy' (India Office records refer).
