Lot Essay

Colour-Sergeant James Smith was born in Carlisle and originally enlisted into the 21st Foot from the Lanark Militia in November 1857. Transferring into the 94th Foot as a Private in February 1869, he had gained steady promotion to the rank of Colour-Sergeant by January 1877 and was awarded his L.S. and G.C. Medal in August 1878. Smith was discharged in April 1880.
