Lot Essay

Colour-Sergeant George Bayford was born in Devizes, Wiltshire in 1828 and joined the 33rd Foot in 1844. In November 1851 he was tried by Court Martial for making a frivolous complaint to a Pay Sergeant and was sentenced to 20 days hard labour. He served two years four months in the Crimea, was appointed Colour-Sergeant in 1858, and discharged at his own request in India in 1860.
