Private Frederick Stevens was born in the Parish of Cookham, near Maidenhead and enlisted into the 90th (Perthshire) Light Infantry at Rochester in July 1848, aged 18 years. He subsequently sailed with his Regiment for the Crimea, where he served for four months and qualified for the 'Sebastopol' clasp. Once more on active service in the Indian Mutiny, he accompanied Havelock's Column to Lucknow and participated in the second stage of the siege - 'Additional service of one year allowed to reckon towards Good Conduct Pension for Defence of Lucknow' (War Office records refer). Later employed at the final capture of Lucknow, he was further entitled to a share of Prize Money. Stevens went on to qualify for his L.S. and G.C. Medal in November 1865 and was discharged at Winchester in May 1869.
