D.C.M. London Gazette 28.3.1918 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his Officer and N.C.Os had become casualties he took charge of the gun teams. The guns when mounted were destroyed, and only his rifle was available for use. He remained with his men unsupported in shell holes for about seven hours, and accounted for several of the enemy. Though almost entirely surrounded, he succeeded in leading his men back, carrying with him a wounded man'.
