D.S.O. London Gazette 21.1.1896 'In recognition of service during the operations of the Chitral Relief Force'.

Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Balmain Low, D.S.O., was born in October 1864, the son of General Sir Robert Low, G.C.B. Commissioned as a Lieutenant in February 1885, he joined the Indian Staff Corps later that year and saw active service in the Lushai and Hazara Expeditions of 1889 and 1891. Afterwards appointed an A.D.C. to the Major-General, Bengal District, 1892-95, and to the G.O.C., Chitral Relief Force, Major-General Sir K.C. Low, K.C.B., he was Mentioned in Despatches for his services with the latter (London Gazette 15.11.1895 refers) and awarded the D.S.O. The insignia was presented to him by Queen Victoria in February 1896. Low returned to active service in the Tirah and Bara Valley Expeditions of 1897-98 and again in the Boxer Rebellion, when he served as Commandant and Provost Marshal between July 1900 and June 1902, and was present in the actions of Peitsang and Yangtsun, in addition to the relief of Pekin. Awarded the Brevet of Major in November 1900 and advanced to Major, Indian Army in February 1911, he was a Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General in India between 1905-09. Further advanced to Lieutenant-Colonel in Hodson's Horse in February 1911, he served with the B.E.F. prior to being given a special appointment (graded as D.A.A.G.) in May 1915.
