Flight Lieutenant Alec Chilton, D.F.C., was born in Reading in 1922 and commissioned into the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in 1942 after completing his Pilot's Course in Canada. He was recommended for his D.F.C. for the following deeds:

'One night in September 1943, whilst on an Anti-Submarine Patrol, a U-Boat was sighted. After illuminating the vessel with the Leigh Light, heavy anti-aircraft fire was experienced, but despite this an accurate attack was delivered with gallantry and determination. On a more recent occasion in November 1943, another enemy Submarine was located in the Atlantic. Part of the aircraft's equipment was almost unserviceable and conditions were poor, nevertheless, an attack was pressed home with skill and determination despite a difficult and hazardous approach. This Officer has shown the keenest enthusiasm for flying throughout his tour of duty'.
