A RARE FACTORY ENGRAVED 12 GAUGE WINCHESTER MODEL 1897 PIGEON GRADE BLACK DIAMOND TAKE-DOWN SHOTGUN, SERIAL No. E 796442
Bead sighted barrel with matted sighting plain, deluxe checkered walnut fore-end on take-down magazine tube, factory engraved frame with decorative scroll-work highlighting large panel scenes of two pointers flushing quail and four ducks taking flight from a marsh, rare black diamond inlaid deluxe oil finished walnut pistol grip stock with checkered wrist and rare Monte-Carlo comb, mounted with factory original WINCHESTER red rubber recoil pad (tired and collapsing). Together with its original leather leg-o-mutton type case (worn overall).
30 inch barrel, FULL choke, 14 1/4 inch pull.
With areas of minor light wear (most apparent at magazine tube) retaining nearly all original blue finish, bears a light abrasion at face of frame (left side), stock and fore-end with some light marks and small cracks to burl of wood at butt plate, recoil pad as mentioned above.
A nearly identical engraving pattern appears on a Model 1897 in Winchester Engraving by R.L. Wilson (page 365). Based on original designs by Conrad F. and John Ulrich, that frame is engraved by George Ulrich.
