THREE HOPI POLYCHROME WOOD KACHINA DOLLS
The first representing Shalako Mana, standing on stout legs, with arms carved in low relief against the torso, wear traditional costume including dress, cape, sash and turquoise jewelry, case mask painted white with with hatched rainbow at chin, hatched triangles on checks, rectangular eyes, overhanging brow with checkerboard motif, surmounted by an elaborate openwork tableta headdress, composed of a single terraced panel with openwork including two central stepped patterns painted in orange, blue, yellow, red, green, black and white; the second representing the Hemis Kachina, standing on stout legs, with arms carved in low relief close to the torso, wearing an elaborate kilt with sash, fox skin carved in low relief and painted at the back, hide arm bands, case mask painted orange, blue, red, white and black, decorated with square and circular motifs, a band of cloud designs across the top, green ruff, surmounted by a terraced single panel tableta headdress, painted in similar colors, decorated with cloud designs and phallic symbols, accented with grain, holding a rattle; the third, representing Honan, standing on straight legs, arms extending outward, painted black with white deatils, wearing a kilt with sash, case mask painted brown and bisected by white column, decorated with yellow badger paws on each cheek, almond shaped eyes, protruding snout, fur ruff, feathers on either side, holding rattles in each hand
