Engraved document signed ("Th:Jefferson") as President, countersigned by James Madison as Secretary of State, issued in New York, 23 November 1805. 1 page, folio, PRINTED ON PARCHMENT, accomplished in manuscript, with scalloped top edge, large papered Great Seal of the United States. A SHIP'S PASSPORT. Attractively engraved, with calligraphic heading "By the President of the United States of America," vignettes of a fully-rigged American sailing vessel at top and a detailed harbor scene with lighthouse and sailing vessels, requesting that the Brig Elvial of New York be permitted to pass "with her Company, Passengers, Goods and Merchandise without any hindrance, seizure of molestation..."
