ROBERT TODD LINCOLN WRITES ON BEHALF OF HIS MOTHER

A poignant note to a friend of Mary Todd Lincoln's (see lots 130, 131, 134, 140). The letter was almost certainly written between the death of the President (15 April) and Mary's departure from the White House (23 May). Most probably, it was written just before the funeral observances, on the 19th of April. Robert writes, in a hurried, scrawl: "Mother desires me to express her thanks for your kindness, but says that she could not permit you to sit up all night in your present state of health. There are several ladies now in the house so that there will be no lack of attention."

[With:] A small envelope, inscribed in pencil "President Lincoln," and in ink "hair," containing a small circular curl of brown hair, both enclosed with the above in a later envelope with ink inscription "President Lincoln's hair and Robert Lincoln's note."
