MADISON, Dolley, First Lady. Autograph letter signed ("D.P.M.") to James Madison Cutts, n.p., ca.1830. 1 page, 4to, neatly inlaid to larger sheet. PORTRAIT MINIATURES OF JEFFERSON AND MADISON. In 1805, the painter Gilbert Stuart had executed portraits of both Madison and Jefferson; miniature copies were made from them in France. The wife of President James Madison writes to her nephew and husband's namesake, James Madison Cutts: "Will you have the kindness to return to me the two small likenesses, executed in Paris? I wish to have them copied directly for the sake of him, who superintended the execution of them in France. They were under glass you know, and that was immovable - and the likeness when taken from Stewart's remarkably good."
