NELSON, Horatio (1758-1805), Admiral. Document signed ("Nelson & Bronte") with autograph date, n.p., 6 April 1803. 1 page, 4to, 187 x 200 mm., neatly inlaid, several letters at extreme left-hand edge shaved. A TESTIMONIAL FOR A FELLOW NAVAL COMMANDER. Two years after his failed attack on the French naval base at Boulogne, Nelson issues a document to "certify the Principle Officers and Commissioners of His Majesty's Navy that Lieut. Charles Montagu Fabian commanded the Allied Armed Cutter Queenbro' from the 5th of August 1801 to the 17 of October 1801 during which time the said cutter was under my orders." In early 1801 the British Navy's objective was the port of Copenhagen. Nelson's very public affair with Lady Hamilton had caused him to be appointed only second in command to the elderly admiral Sir Hyde Parker. The attack on Copenhagen was a huge victory. Nelson succeeded Parker to become Commander-in-Chief and immediately planned an ambitious attack on the naval base of Boulogne in order to foil a possible French invasion. He did not take part himself, and the operation was a failure. A second attempt was abandoned due to peace negotiations with France, and in March 1802 the Treaty of Amiens was signed.
