"PEOPLE MAY WELL LOOK BACK AND SEE THAT THE POSITIVE ACHIEVEMENTS OF OUR ADMINISTRATION FAR OUTWEIGH THE MISTAKES WE MADE"
Only two months after his voluntary resignation in the face of possible impeachment, Nixon writes to Capp (1909-1979), the creator of the "L'il Abner" comic strip, which ran from 1934 to 1977 and was noted for its outspoken comments on current events and politics: "One of the few dividends of going through a difficult personal crisis is that you find out who your real friends are. I have been most grateful for your courageous and loyal friendship in the years I was in the Presidency, and I cherish the fact that we shall continue to work together in the future for those great causes which serve our country, and for that matter, the cause of peace for all nations. It will take time to get some of the events of the recent past into perspective, but I agree with you that one day people may well look back and see that the positive achievements of our Administration far outweigh the mistakes we made which received such enormous publicity."
