Lincoln"), countersigned by James Shields (1806?-1879, later Oregon Governor), Springfield, Ill,, 17 November 1841. 1 page, narrow oblong, clipped from a warrant register, accomplished in a manuscript, endorsed on verso by Lincoln. Fine. Illinois State Treasurer's warrant (number 7181) to "A. Lincoln or order," in payment "for Jesse K. DuBois compensation for making an abstract of lands entered at Palestine, Illinois." -- DOUGLAS, Stephen A. (1813-1861). Partly printed document (voucher) signed ("S.A. Douglass"), similar to the preceding, Springfield, 31 December 1842. 1 page, an oblong. A voucher (Number 10448) for Douglas (a Presidential hopeful in later years), for "part of his salary and of the Judges of the Supreme Court..." -- MADISON, James (1751-1836), President. Autograph letter signed ("James Madison") as Sec. of State to S. Bayad, Washington, D.C., 31 October 1807. 1 page, 4to. Fine. The Secretary confirms transmission of money to the U.S. Consul in London. Bayard, Madison's correspondent, was an eminent jurist: "I have the Honor to inform you that the Secretary of the Treasury has this day been requested to cause a Remittance...to be made to General Lyman, Consul...at London, to pay the Balance still due to the Proctors..." -- TYLER, John (1790-1862), President. Autograph letter signed ("John Tyler") as President to R. Goodwin, Washington, D.C., 5 November 1842. 1 full page, 4to, blue ink. Fine. Protocol for Postmaster appointments: "...I shall lose no time in calling the attention of the P.M. General to its contents...with him under the law, rests the exclusive control over all post offices...my confidence in him is so great as to leave me at perfect ease..He will not, I am sure, permit Mr. Parke to be unjustly dealt by..." -- PIERCE, Franklin (1804-1869), President.
