WASHINGTON, George, President. Letter signed ("Go: Washington") as President, to Paine Wingate, a New Hampshire Senator, Mount Vernon, 4 November 1790. 1 page, 4to, written in a clear secretarial hand, docketed on verso, neat repairs to several marginal tears without loss, very slight spotting. Enclosed in a custom-made quarter blue morocco clamshell protective case.
A brief, formal response to the Senator: "Sir, Previous to the receipt of your letter of the 16th ultimo, with which I was favored two days ago, a gentleman had been appointed to succeed Mr. [John Taylor] Gilman as Commissioner of loans for the State of New Hampshire."
Wingate, a Federalist Governor, had written the President to inquire about filling the vacancy of Commissioner of Loans for his state, unaware that the position had already been accorded to John Taylor Gilman (1753-1828), a veteran of the Revolution who had served briefly in Congress and for a time as New Hampshire's treasurer.
Not in Writings, ed. J.C. Fitzpatrick.
